Website not generating leads? 7 causes and how to fix them

If your website is not generating leads, the cause is usually one of seven fixable problems. Here is how to diagnose each one and what to do about it.

  • 5-minute self-check
  • Fixes ranked by impact
  • When to redesign

The 7 most common causes

1. The wrong people are visiting

Traffic that does not match your services will never convert. Check Google Search Console for the search terms bringing visitors. If they are informational or unrelated, refocus your pages on the services you sell and the places you serve.

2. Visitors cannot tell what you do in five seconds

Your headline should say what you offer, who it is for and where. Vague slogans make visitors work too hard.

3. There is no clear next step

Every page needs one primary call to action, visible without scrolling on a phone: call, book, or request a quote.

4. The site is slow on mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. Test your pages with PageSpeed Insights. Large images and too many plugins are the usual culprits.

5. There is no proof

Reviews, case studies, credentials and real photos reduce risk for buyers. Stock photos and no testimonials do the opposite.

6. Your forms are broken or too long

Forms that silently fail are more common than most owners think. See our guide to contact forms that do not work.

7. You are not tracking leads

Without call and form tracking you cannot tell which pages or channels work. Set up conversion tracking in Google Analytics 4 before changing anything else.

A 5-minute self-check

Open your site on your phone and check:

  • Can a stranger tell what you do in five seconds?
  • Is there a call or quote button on screen without scrolling?
  • Does the page load in under three seconds?
  • Do you show reviews or results near the top?
  • Did a test form submission arrive in your inbox?
  • Is Google Analytics recording form submissions and calls?

Fix, optimize or redesign?

If your site fails one or two checks, targeted fixes and landing pages are usually enough. If it fails most of them, or is built on an outdated platform, a website redesign will often cost less than patching. Our free audit tells you which applies.

Frequently asked questions

How many leads should my website generate?

It depends on traffic and industry. Many service business websites convert 2% to 5% of visitors into inquiries.

Will more traffic fix my lead problem?

Only if the site converts. Fix clarity, calls to action and forms first, then invest in traffic.

How long do fixes take to show results?

Conversion fixes often show results within weeks; SEO improvements take longer.
